We will relive some of its memorable moments and epic matches that have left an indelible mark on the annals of football history.

The World Cup, held every four years, has been graced by football legends and has seen the rise of new stars. Its history is filled with unforgettable moments, from the spectacle of goals and drama to the agony of defeat and the thrill of victory.

Let's start by taking a stroll down memory lane to 1950 when one of the most shocking World Cup moments took place in Brazil. Dubbed "Maracanazo", it refers to the 1950 FIFA World Cup final match between Brazil and Uruguay. Played at the gigantic Maracanã Stadium, the match saw the hosts Brazil needing only a draw to claim the title. The entire nation was confident of a victory, but Uruguay had other plans as they came from behind to win the match 2-1. The historic victory was sealed when Alcides Ghiggia scored the decisive goal in the final minutes, sending shockwaves through the 200,000 Brazilian spectators and etching itself in the memory of every football fan.

Another remarkable event occurred during the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. The quarterfinal match between Austria and Switzerland, known as the "Hitzeschlacht von La Pontaise" or the "Heat at La Pontaise." This match ended in a mind-boggling 7-5 victory for Austria after they were trailing 3-0 early in the game. The match still holds the record for the highest-scoring game in World Cup history.

Jumping ahead to 1970, we find one of the most famous football moments ever captured on film, featuring none other than the legendary Pelé. During the group stage match against England, powerful goalkeeper Gordon Banks managed to produce the "Save of the Century" by stopping Pelé's header from close range. The agility and anticipation displayed by Banks are still admired by sports enthusiasts to this day.

Also in 1970, the finals between Brazil and Italy produced what can only be described as a football masterpiece. Brazil's squad, led by the incomparable Pelé, proved to be the better team, thrashing Italy 4-1. The victory was all the more sweet as it allowed Brazil to keep the distinct Jules Rimet Trophy permanently, having won the World Cup for the third time. Furthermore, the Brazilian team of 1970 is often referred to as the greatest football team of all time, featuring stars like Pelé, Jairzinho, Rivelino, and Carlos Alberto.

Moving on to the 1986 World Cup, one cannot forget the exploits of Argentine legend Diego Maradona. The quarterfinal match against England was the stage where Maradona showcased his exceptional skills. During this game, Maradona scored one of the most controversial goals in history, famously referred to as the "Hand of God." He managed to punch the ball into the net unnoticed by the referee. However, his second goal of the game was nothing short of sensational, a solo run from his own half that evaded five English defenders before he slotted the ball past goalkeeper Peter Shilton. This moment is widely regarded as the “Goal of the Century”.

In 1994, the World Cup took us to the United States and brought about a dramatic ending to the tournament. Roberto Baggio, one of the best players of the time, had an unfortunate moment during the penalty shootout in the final match between Italy and Brazil. Baggio blasted the ball over the crossbar, sealing the victory for Brazil. This heartbreaking miss is still remembered by millions today.

In recent times, we witnessed an unforgettable match between Brazil and Germany during the 2014 World Cup held in Brazil. The semifinal match was expected to be a nail-biting battle between two football giants. However, the unthinkable occurred as Germany ran rampant, hammering Brazil 7-1 in front of their devastated fans. This defeat is considered the most significant humiliation in Brazilian football history and stands out as one of the most unforgettable games of any World Cup.

While talking about the 2014 World Cup, it's impossible not to mention the final match between Germany and Argentina. The match, which was well-fought from both sides, was eventually decided by a stunning goal in extra time. German striker Mario Götze displayed incredible skill and composure as he controlled André Schürrle's cross before volleying it past Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero, claiming the fourth World Cup title for Germany.

The latest edition of the World Cup, in 2018, saw a remarkable outcome as France lifted the trophy for the second time in their history. One of the most memorable games was the thrilling 4-3 victory over Argentina in the round of 16. This match saw the incredible talent of Kylian Mbappé, with the then 19-year-old scoring a brace and becoming one of the stars of the tournament.

The FIFA World Cup always delivers drama, excitement, and moments that remain etched in the memories of football fans worldwide. Every edition brings about controversies, heroic performances, and stories of triumph and defeat that become part of football's rich history. With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar just around the corner, we can only imagine what incredible moments and unforgettable matches lie ahead, but one thing is certain - they will leave an indelible mark on the hearts of sports enthusiasts across the globe.
